HOW TO BEHAVE IN THE KRKONOŠE MOUNTAINS DURING THE SUMMER HEATWAVE

The Krkonoše Mountains

Nine tips that are well worth following.

Summer in the Krkonoše Mountains offers more pleasant temperatures than in the lowlands, yet even the mountain environment is not without its risks on hot days. High temperatures, strong sunshine or afternoon thunderstorms can quickly complicate a day out. If you’re planning a hike, it’s worth following a few simple rules to make your time in the mountains safer and more enjoyable.

Set off early
The best time for mountain walks is early in the morning or late in the afternoon. Between 11 am and 4 pm, the sun is at its strongest and temperatures reach their peak. A morning walk is not only more pleasant but also safer.

Don’t forget to take plenty of water
There aren’t many places on mountain ridges where you can top up your drinking water. Therefore, take at least 2 to 3 litres of fluids per person with you, depending on the length and difficulty of your planned route. Regularly replenishing your fluids is one of the most important rules when out and about in the mountains in summer.

Protect yourself from the sun
Although it may seem that it isn’t as hot in the mountains, the sun’s rays are more intense at higher altitudes. A hat, good-quality sunglasses and sun cream with a high sun protection factor should be standard items in every rucksack.

Don’t overestimate your strength
The heat can tire the body out much more quickly than usual. Adapt the length and difficulty of your route to your physical fitness, and don’t forget to take regular breaks in the shade.

Think of the children and your four-legged companions
Young children and dogs are more susceptible to overheating than adults. Make sure there is enough water for everyone in your group, and do not let dogs run on hot paths or rocks.

Fires do not belong in the countryside
During dry periods, the risk of wildfires increases significantly. Do not light fires outside designated areas and do not throw away cigarette ends. Even a moment’s inattention can have serious consequences for the mountain environment.

Keep an eye on the weather
Afternoon thunderstorms are a typical feature of summer days in the Krkonoše Mountains. They can be very dangerous on the ridges. If the weather starts to change rapidly or you hear thunder, leave exposed sections of the route as soon as possible and seek a safe place.

Keep your mobile phone charged
A mobile phone can make all the difference in an emergency. It’s useful not only for checking the latest weather forecast, but above all for calling for help.

Don’t underestimate the signs of overheating
Severe tiredness, headache, dizziness, nausea or confusion can be symptoms of heatstroke or heat exhaustion. If you or anyone in your group experiences these symptoms, stop your hike, move into the shade, rehydrate, and call for help if your condition worsens.

Safety comes first
The Krkonoše Mountains are a wonderful place for summer hiking, but they deserve respect. With good preparation, plenty of fluids and by keeping an eye on the latest weather forecast, you’ll be able to enjoy your trip to the full and stay safe.

In an emergency, call 112 or the Mountain Rescue Service on 1210.
