WINTER IS FINALLY OVER IN THE KRKONOŠE

arrow-left16.6. - 30.6.2025

The map of the republic has melted. The last remnants of snow on the well-known slope of Studniční hora have disappeared.

We call the snow field on the southern slope of Studniční hora the map of the republic.

Although it lies on the southern slope, which thaws the earliest, the snow remains here practically the longest in the Krkonoše.

The reason for this is the modelling of the terrain and the wind currents of the anemo-orographic system of the White Elbe, which regularly deposit huge amounts of snow here. The snow layer then reaches many metres high.

As the snow field thaws, it gradually loses the shape of the First Republic of Czechoslovakia with Subcarpathian Russia, then Slovakia, and finally Central Bohemia.

Tourists have noticed the characteristic shape of the snowfield and have nicknamed it the Map of the Republic. Because it is now located in the rest area of the KRNAP, tourists cannot walk directly to it. However, it can be seen well from the path between Výrovka and the Memorial to the Mountain Victims, or from the Na Rozcestí buffet. In good weather it can be seen from distances of more than 100 km.
