Route description

The route starts at the upper station Medvědín, which can be reached comfortably by cable car and from where you can follow the red hiking trail to the Golden Hill.

This initial passage, ending at Vrbatova bouda, is characterized as relatively easy with one major exception, the climb to Vrbatova bouda itself. It is followed by a path along the Labský dol, a picturesque valley where the Pančavský waterfall, the highest waterfall in the Czech Republic, is hidden. A short stop at Labská bouda, a mountain hut with a long history, offers the opportunity for refreshments before the next stage of the route.

From Labská bouda, the trail winds along the yellow trail up to the transmitter, a prominent point already visible from the Krkonoše ridge. The climb is compensated by breathtaking views. The highlight of this part of the route is the Sněžné jámy (Snow Pits), impressive glacial craters with lakes at the bottom. Located right on the ridge route of the Czech-Polish Friendship Route, this area offers several viewpoints and is dominated by the aforementioned TV transmitter.

You continue along the ridge, where you will enjoy beautiful views and at the signpost Česká budka you will descend gently to the source of the Elbe. From the source of the Elbe, follow the yellow trail back to Vrbatova bouda and then to Medvědín, which completes the route.

This route is a typical Krkonoše ridge route, suitable for more experienced hikers who want to enjoy the beauty of the Krkonoše Mountains, offering a comprehensive view of the diversity of this mountain landscape. It combines physical challenge with extraordinary natural experiences.

Two massive glacial cirques on the eastern slope of the High Plain. At the bottom of the Great Snow Pit there are two glacial lakes, and a basalt vein runs through the Small Snow Pit, in the vicinity of which there are two hundred species of rare plants. Above the pits rises a hut reminiscent of Krakow Castle.

Vrbatova bouda

Vrbatova bouda belongs to a chain of summit huts, which represent solid points of reference for all inhabitants and visitors of the Krkonoše Mountains. It is located on the ridges of the Giant Mountains on the Golden Hill at an altitude of 1,400 m above sea level. In its immediate vicinity is the source of the Elbe and the Pančavský waterfall with a beautiful view of the Elbe mine. It is named after Václav Vrbata from Mříčná, who tragically died on April 24, 1913 during an international 50-kilometer ski race together with his friend Bohumil Hanč from Hrabačov.

Labská bouda

It is a popular stop for tourists heading to the source of the Elbe. Hotel Labská bouda is located in the first zone of the Giant Mountains National Park. It is situated at an altitude of 1340 m on the Elbe meadow northwest of Špindlerův Mlýn, less than 1 km from the source of the Elbe. The modern building from 1975 bears the same name as the inn, which burned down in 1965. However, the history of this place dates back to 1830, when an enterprising woman allegedly sold goat products and spirits to passers-by and had a small booth made of stones, bark and brushwood.
